In the prologue word Is sent to a bourgeois gentilhomme, who has engaged an opera company and a commedia dell'arte troupe, that to save time their entertainments must be combined. The Composer of the opera is persuaded by the old Music Master and by Zerbinetta, leader of the troupe, to acquiesce. There follows the opera-within-an-opera. the classical story of Ariadne's abandonment on Naxos.
