The Fifth Generation Since the most recent generation of directors graduated from China's only film school in Peking - the fifth since the school was founded in the 1950s - the reputation of Chinese cinema has grown abroad. Films like Chen Kaige's Yellow Earth have been acclaimed at international festivals, but at home such films are the focus of controversy as the Chinese leadership reconsiders its attitude to the arts. Film-maker and critic Tony Rayns, who has just returned from China, reports on 'The Fifth Generation'. Producer JULIAN MAY

As the General Synod prepares to meet in York, Chris Cviic assesses the balance offerees within the Church of England and asks what kind of institution may emerge from the current uncertainties. Producer FRASER STEEL
