The building of the Benguela Railway, linking the West Coast of Africa with the famous Cape to Cairo Railway, was the realisation of the lifelong dream of Sir Robert Williams , a friend and contemporary of Cecil Rhodes.
The railway is powered by fragrant eucalyptus logs which are felled from plantations at the side of the track.
Nancy Wise recently travelled along the railway, where all the original British rolling stock is still in use, and discovers the story of Sir Robert Williams in conversation with people who remember him, including his only surviving daughter.
