- an appreciation of Dame Sybil Thorndike by her son, John Casson
In the summer of 1904 Sybil Thorndike set off for America in Ben Greet's company of players. It was the beginning of a life in the theatre which was to span over 60 years. Sybil Thorndike , actress, pianist, Companion of Honour, Dame of the British Empire. Honorary Doctor of Laws and Literature, Freeman of the City of Rochester, wife. mother of four, and friend and confidant to thousands of people - old, young, great and small, famous, infamous, and even notorious - was above all things an enthusiast for life, and probably the most dearly-loved actress to be seen on the British stage this century.
