A Mother's Bight
Childbirth ought to be the most natural and satisfying experience in a woman's life. Yet increasingly we hear complaints that our maternity services are making it a very mechanical and inhumane procedure. Two of the subjects about which there is most concern are ' production-line induction of labour and whether it's best to give birth at home or in hospital.

Bernard Jack is a ' wood man ' in two senses: he is fascinated by trees that are living and growing, and also by the fine woods they produce after they are felled. He spends many hours enjoying and cataloguing the trees in his pleasant rural part of Staffordshire, but he is also a craftsman. In his workshop - formerly a railway waiting-room - he restores antique furniture in the original woods, and using the original craftsman's tools.

The Communities of Portland and Weymouth have a disposal problem - sewage. Solving Weymouth's with a new pipeline on the other side of the Bill could mean (say Portlanders) a new menace to their already polluted shores, including the famous Chesil Bank.

In his first three lectures DR BLAKEMORE discussed consciousness and the ways that we perceive the external world. He continues with an account of the feature of the brain that gives our perceptions substance - the phenomenon of memory. He argues that it is the predictive power of memory and learning that gives them such immense biological survival value.
