The Way of All Flesh by SAMUEL BUTLER , abridged in 15 parts by JACK SINGLETON Read by Richard Leech (1)
First published in 1903, a year after Butler's death, The Way of A Flesh was a spectacular success. The story of Ernest Pontifex and his struggle to escape the domination of his father has been described as a hymn of hate against Victorian Christianity, Victorian family life and in particular against Butler's own parents-a devastating reprisal raid across the generation gap '. (Music: Janacek's Idyll)

Liberty and the Law
Presented by John Eidinow
The rule of law, it is arguefl, is in retreat; Lord Hailsham has spoken of an elective dictatorship '. New pressures, particularly the prospect of devolved government, could lead to a written catalogue of civil liberties and fundamental constitution changes. How realistic, and necessary, is such reform? How best can the citizens' rights be defined and preserved? Should the state and society be subject to greater legal control?
