Between Hilversum and Athlone on the dial lay the BBC's national and regional programmes, both under firm Reithian control.
The wireless listener of the 1930s was fed an incessant diet of dance bands and establishment voices - until 1936 when it was discovered that the microphone could operate outside the confines of the studio and Sir John Reith's bright young men rushed headlong into the world.
