This was the year the BBC came of age and celebrated its 21st birthday. It was a BBC now dedicated to the war effort: from Tommy Handley and ITMA to Godfrey Talbot in Africa: from the Radio Allotment to the inside of a bomber on a raid over Berlin. For the first time the reality of war came into homes and radio took its place on the front line.
