Last of four programmes 4: The Vitamin C Debate
How much vitamin C should our diet contain to ensure the best of health? Orthodox nutritionists say we need a daily intake equivalent to the vitamin C content of one orange. But the American chemist Dr Linus Pauling argues that we should be consuming instead the equivalent of 100 oranges a day to ensure the best of health. Pauling contends that large doses of the vitamin help fend off the common cold, and also that large quantities of vitamin C may help the body defend itself against cancer.
Farooq Hussain investigates the evidence for Pauling's extraordinary claims.
