The Fifth Generation Since the most recent generation of directors graduated from China's only film school in Peking - the fifth since the school was founded in the 1950s - the reputation of Chinese cinema has grown abroad. Films like Chen Kaige's Yellow Earth have been acclaimed at international festivals, but at home such films are the focus of controversy as the Chinese leadership reconsiders its attitude to the arts.
