A Little World of Our Own Wherever they ended up after being captured, the thousands of British PoWs in Europe had to face together the appalling fact that there was no foreseeable end to their imprisonment. Ignorant of the true course of the war - and of the circumstances of their loved ones at home - they had also to endure the physical distress of life in the camps: poor and insufficient food, overcrowding, the uncertain attitude of their guards and the sheer tedium of the unchanging daily routine. David Wade has talked to a number of former PoWs, and in this second of two programmes he constructs from their memories of 40 years ago a picture of what it was like to be a prisoner of war.
