Keeping the public informed and entertained can be an expensive business. But how much does it cost to make a half-hour television drama or an hour-long radio programme? The BBC receives about ã500-million a year from licence fees. But where does all the money go?
With the licence fee once again under negotiation, is there a case for changing the system?
What are the alternatives? Advertising? Direct taxation? Which method is the best? Are we getting value for money? If you've often wondered how your money is spent, put questions to the Director-General of the BBC, Sir Ian Trethowan, who joins Sue MacGregor in the studio.
