On 29 December 1977, the process began of telling 110 members of Syndicate 762 that the group had been stopped from doing any more business in the Lloyd's insurance market, leaving them personally liable for its debts, which now exceed £20-million. And so began an affair with consequences rfo one foresaw at the time, consequences both for men facing personal ruin, and for the legendary institution of Lloyd's itself.

The Ballad of Aucassin andNicolette
Text by CHARLES CAUSLEY ,
.with music composed by .'STEPHEN NtCNEFp
STEPHENMCNEFF
Aucassin and Nicolette ts one of the oldest extant epiesof European literature coming down to us lit the form of a 13th-century Picardian manuscript, though the sources are said to be Arabic or even Greek. The Cornish poet Charles Causley has retranslated and adapted the text, working closely to the original ballad style and mood. An unusual mixture of medieval courtly love and low bawdy humour, it is the story of the passion of Aucassin, son of a count. for Nicolette, a Saracen captive, their separation and eventual reunion.
