Archaeologist Robert Varley is disillusioned with his life's work. He has begun to wonder 'What is the point of digging up broken vases from the past?' Also his marriage to social worker Morwenna has begun to lose its excitement. Then, one night when they are cut off by a snow blizzard, they receive a visit from another archaeologist, a grand old man and eccentric who humours Robert into looking at life and death from another angle.
