Aucassin and Nicolette is one of the oldest extant epics of European literature coming down to us in the form of a 13th-century Picardian manuscript, though the sources are said to be Arabic or even Greek. The Cornish poet Charles Causley has retranslated and adapted the text, working closely to the original ballad style and mood. An unusual mixture of medieval courtly love and low bawdy humour, it is the story of the passion of Aucassin, son of a count, for Nicolette, a Saracen captive, their separation and eventual reunion.

5: An Elusive Peace
The 1970s were a decade of extremes in the Middle East, from the October War of 1973 to the dramatic relaxation of tension between Israel and Egypt after President Sadat's historic journey to Jerusalem in 1977. But the issue of autonomy for the Palestinians of the West Bank remains unresolved, and there is continuing instability in Lebanon, as well as political uncertainty in Syria and Iraq. In spite of the enthusiasm of Camp David, comprehensive peace remains as elusive as ever. With contributions from many of the figures involved, Edward Mortimer looks at ten years of the search for peace in the Middle East.

Ronald Pickup presents a personal view of Julius Caesar.
'I've never believed that Shakespeare has to be dragged by the scruff of his neck into the 20th century, presenting, let us say, Julius Caesar as a "Hitler figure" and everybody else around him in jackboots. Julius Caesar is certainly a play about power-politics, but bound up with that is a strong moral sense.'
