On 29 December 1977, the process began of telling 110 members of Syndicate 762 that the group had been stopped from doing any more business in the Lloyd's insurance market, leaving them personally liable for its debts, which now exceed £20-million. And so began an affair with consequences rfo one foresaw at the time, consequences both for men facing personal ruin, and for the legendary institution of Lloyd's itself.
