In 1976 Jimmy Carter took office in the White House amidst enthusiastic cries about his plain Southern honesty and his open Christianity. To disillusioned Americans, tired of dogged leadership and scandal in high places, his boyish naivety had political charm. Now three years on, those qualities have been much tested on issues of such international significance as the Middle East Agreement, SALT 11, Human Rights, and Southern Africa. But Jimmy Carter is only the tip of the ice-berg of American Evangelical Christianity. What influence have the ' born again ' had on the White House? Has early optimism now soured to disillusionment? Does a direct Bible-based - some would say simplistic - faith carry enough weight to affect the way the United States leads the West and influences the world?
