Three years after the death of Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery,
John Laffin. the military historian, feels free to talk about ' Monty ' as he knew him. John and the Field-Marshal were close friends and when the two men met they discussed Monty's strategy in the North African campaigns of the 1939-45 war, and Monty gave John his own assessment of some of his wartime comrades and critics.

The film festival's main competition opened two weeks ago with the exuberance of Milos For-man's Hair and closed last night with the British entry, James Ivory 's controversial adaptation of Henry James 's The Europeans. In between were new films by Fellini, Wajda and Francis Ford Coppola's long-awaited treatment of the Vietnam War - Apocalypse Now.
Tony Palmer has been talking to critics, directors and actors in Cannes and brings news of the awards which are announced tonight.
