In May of last year, a points failure caused the end carriage of an express service from King's Cross to King's Lynn to derail and career into Potters Bar station in Hertfordshire at nearly 100mph, killing seven people. This Rail Cops documentary follows survivors of the UK's fifth fatal train crash in as many years - including children's author Nina Bawden, who lost her husband in the disaster - and reports on the British Transport Police's investigation into the calamity.

On 10 May last year, the 12.45pm nonstop service from King's Cross to King's Lynn crashed into Potters Bar station at nearly 100mph. Seven people died - six passengers and an 80-year-old woman walking under a nearby bridge, who was killed by flying debris.
This thoughtful documentary looks at the effects of the accident on those who survived, those who were bereaved and on rescuers. It also follows the huge police inquiry, which began immediately, and the attempts by a team of officers to pinpoint the cause of the crash.
But, as ever, it's the human stories that strike the hardest - particularly the now unbearably poignant CCTV footage that recorded passengers running for the train and their seats in the fourth and final carriage, which left the track and flew sideways down the platform. It's hard to watch such footage with the foreknowledge that these people were to lose their lives only minutes later.
There are stories of grief and loss. Children's author Nina Bawden lost her husband of 45 years in the crash. She herself was badly hurt. Another woman, widowed by the accident and left to bring up her four children alone, talks of how she struggled to make sense of her husband's death in the immediate aftermath. There are stories, too, of great fortitude, including those of survivors who are overcoming terrible injuries with humour and a lack of self-pity.
