Too Close for Comfort?
Another chance to see this film revealing the true life of chimpanzees in their forest home. Shot over two years, it includes some remarkable photography by Michael Richards of 60 chimpanzees hunting and killing monkeys for food - climaxing in a screaming, frenzied scrum for meat. It appears horrific, but a closer look shows that these chimps hunt in a highly organised, intelligent way. Each of the large males has a specific role: some go ahead and block the monkeys' escape as others drive them forward. Besides their hunting skills, the chimps use 19 tools - only humans use more. And theirs is also a warm, intimate society. So might they be our nearest relations?
