Live coverage from the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg as the championship, second in importance only to the World Cup, reaches a climax.
Four years ago, in Munich's
Olympic Stadium, Holland beat the Soviet Union 2-0, with goals from Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten , to win the championship for the first time. When the Dutch began their defence of the title against
Scotland two weeks ago, they were aware that no country has won successive championships. Indeed, only West Germany has won the championship twice, in 1972 and 1980. The Soviet Union, now playing as the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), have made four final appearances but were winners only once, in 1960. Of the other nations who qualified for the final stages in Sweden, France is the only other previous winner, in 1984, when current manager Michel Platini scored one of the goals in a 2-0 victory against Spain. A now unified Germany, the CIS, plus England, Scotland, host nation Sweden and Denmark (the 11th-hour replacement for banned
Yugoslavia), all entered the tournament aiming to become the eighth different name on the trophy. The 1996 championships will be staged in England. Introduced by Desmond Lynam with Jimmy Hill and Terry Venables.
Commentary by John Motson and Trevor Brooking. Executive producer Jim Reside Editor Brian Barwick
