The Glasnost Assignment With Desmond Wilcox.
Alexander Chunosov , 'Sasha', was born and brought up in the Gulag where his father had been sent as a punishment for refusing to co-operate with the KGB.
Sasha became a photographer for a newspaper in the closed city ofCheljabinsk. Then his pictures of an awesome disaster - when two trains were incinerated by a gas pipe explosion - were brought to Britain and published. It led to an exhibition of his work — and the offer of an assignment. The Independent, known for the quality of its photographic coverage, pointed him at this country's top politicians, at work and play during the party conferences. And that led to some amazing confrontations. Director ALEX MCCALL
