An Avoidable Tragedy As the hunt to bring to justice the murderers of 270 passengers and crew continues into its tenth month, Gavin Hewitt has traced the story from
Scotland to the United States, to the Middle East and West Germany. He has learnt of a series of blunders which made the Lockerbie tragedy possible.
In a specially extended edition, Gavin Hewitt reports on how an intelligence operation against a Palestinian terrorist group in the months before Lockerbie went badly wrong; how the bomb maker was freed from custody; how key members of that group were able to leave Germany. He also looks at how the airlines responded to the warnings of a bombing threat.
