For Connie Taylor, the 11-year-old victim of a tragic road accident in Glasgow, the road back from coma is a long and slow one. But it is the road back, a journey from darkness and silence to light and life. The time came, finally, when Connie was ready to leave hospital. But her injuries had set her back, and would now always be a delaying factor in her life. At school she would have to move into a class of children years younger so that she could 'learn again what they were learning for the first time'. Her hero, the pop star Shakin' Stevens, remained in her life as an inspiration and friend.
Her mother and the dedicated hospital workers were determined that Connie - who had been so near to death and spent so long in darkness - should become an example of just what it takes to withstand and recover from a head injury. And that's exactly what she became: an example of cheerfulness and happiness - a real success story.
