The last of five programmes written and presented by Michael Wood The People
Midsummer's Night - Cornish people gather on Land's End to light a beacon and celebrate ancient Celtic tradition. They live in England but are they
English? Michael Wood explores the English nation from its invention to the present and asks, 'Who are the English?' There are clues in London's East End streets and at Henley's Regatta, in our names and even in our bones. He stumbles into the mosque which has been a church and a synagogue. We meet families from the West Indies, whose home was in Africa but whose pedigree is as English as anyone's. Now Michael resolves issues he has raised in the series and asks a final question: 'Who will the English be when
Domesday is 1000 years old'? Assistant producers

from Ripon Cathedral
Eleven hundred years ago, King Alfred issued a charter to establish the city of Ripon. To mark this event, he presented a horn which is still sounded each night. It is sounded for the start of this special Christmas programme which is introduced by Cliff Michelmore. He hears about Christmas past in Ripon workhouse and finds the army playing host to today's pensioners. Roger Royle meets young people from the city to discover their Christmas message for the future. Ian Gall visits a Dr Barnardo's home in the former palace of the Bishop of Ripon. The people of Ripon gather in their historic cathedral to tell the Christmas story and sing their carols by candlelight.
Carols: O little town of Bethlehem; Adam lay y bounden; It came upon the midnight clear; The donkey carol; Angels from the realms of glory; Silent night; While shepherds watched; For unto us a Son is born; The zither carol; Torches; Hark the herald angels sing; Myn Lyking; We wish you a merry Christmas; O come all ye faithful.

The Galilean Moons
Jupiter is now prominently visible in the evening sky. Any telescope will show it together with its four large satellites, known as the Galileans because they were studied in 1610 by Galileo with his first telescope. They are not alike; two are icy and cratered, one smooth as a billiard ball, and one brilliant red, with violently active volcanoes. Patrick Moore talks about the Galileans, and what we have learned about them from space missions. Producer PIETER MORPURGO
