The 100th Lawn Tennis Championships

The opening day of the world's greatest tennis tournament direct from the All England Club. Featuring the first round of the Men's Singles Championship.

Boris Becker, as defending champion, has the honour of opening play on the Centre Court. The West German created one of the major sensations in sporting history when, at 17, he became the first unseeded player to win the title, but what a formidable task he faces in his attempt to reach the 100th final.

Czech Ivan Lendl is the world's number one player and he has dominated the tennis scene this year, collecting six titles, including the recent French Open, in his build-up to win Wimbledon for the first time. The Swedes bring genuine contenders Mats Wilander, Anders Jarryd, Stefan Edberg and Joakim Nystrom. Only three-times champion John McEnroe is absent from the 128 who line up for the most prestigious title in Tennis.

Steve Rider introduces BBCtv's live coverage of the championship and keeps you up-to-date with news and results from all 18 match courts.

Barry McGuigan (Champion) v Steve Cruz (Challenger)

This time last year Barry McGuigan was about to challenge for the WBA title. Now he's a popular and wealthy champion, whose appeal is such that for the first time since the early 60s, British television will show a fight live in the early hours of the morning.

This is McGuigan's first defence in the USA and Cruz, ranked nine with a record of 24 wins out of 25 with 14 KOs, will have the benefit of home support. But McGuigan's style and spirit attracts fans everywhere, and in the glamorous setting of Las Vegas, this 15-round fight could be his most thrilling yet.

In the studio Desmond Lynam's guest is Frank Bruno, whose own world-title chance is just over three weeks away.
