On Wednesday (BBC1, 10.15 pm Sportsnight) Scotland play the first tag of their game against Australia, the winners of the Oceania group, in the last stage of the qualifying rounds of the World Cap. The match is at Hampden Park and commentator Archie Macpherson believes that Scotland 'really must qualify for Mexico by winning the first game by such a margin that their trip down wider is purely academic'. The problems of the long trip to Australia for the second leg have been heightened by the reluctance of English league clubs to release players for such a long period. Whatever happens though skipper Graeme Souness has a verbal agreement with his club, Sampdoria, and intends to lead his side out in both matches. To anticipate the result of any World Cup game is dangerous, but if Scotland wit by a good margin at home it should see them to Mexico and their fourth World Cap finals in succession.
