Last of three programmes with Desmond Wilcox Marching Forward
When Philip Olds beat his wheelchair and succeeded in walking, some distinguished medical experts described his achievement as 'a few pathetic steps'. Within 18 months those stumbling, but pioneering, footsteps have opened the way for an army of paralysed people to walk again. Not just the spinally injured but victims of paralysing diseases - children who were never expected to walk again, people who've been in wheelchairs for decades.
Now - as this new film shows - portable systems will allow millions in wheelchairs to take their place again, upright among the rest of us - walking freely. And, in the case of the children - running towards the future.

On 23 November 1970, a Lithuanian sailor named Simas Kudirka leapt from a Russian trawler on to the deck of a US Coastguard cutter in search of political asylum. His impulsive action, spurred by his desire for freedom, was to have serious repercussions on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
