Living with Uncle Sam
The last of ten films in which Alan Whicker talks to a wide range of Brits who've gone to live and work in the USA. You muddle-up your brains with a little booze - and they'll take your knickers ...
No such fate has befallen the author of this remark:
Sir Gordon White has, in ten years, turned$3,000 into a company worth a cool billion: 'They only understand excellence in this country, you can't get by with mediocrity.'
America may be the land of opportunity, but when the axe falls it can be a cruel place - as Colin and Veronica Draper experienced.
New York is also the home of a Scot, Albert Watson , one of America's most successful photographers. Vanessa Angel arrived in Manhattan at the age of 17. Three years later, she is a top model with an income of $200,000 a year. But, like many Brits in this series, she still has reservations about life with Uncle Sam: 'They don't care about the quality of life -just how many Porsches they have....' The Prime Minister and the Preacher 'You can't have a compromise. You either have your policy or you have an abject surrender.'
The Rainbow Warrior trial - the case linking the French Secret Service to the mining of Greenpeace's ship - begins in Auckland this week. At the centre of the controversy surrounding the case is the outspoken New Zealand
Prime Minister, David Lange. He has condemned forthrightly France's violation of New Zealand's sovereignty.
Earlier this year, the USA found him equally uncompromising when he announced their nuclear carriers would not be welcome in New Zealand. Lange is a Methodist lay preacher who says that what he does in his political life is a reflection of his Christian convictions.
This Everyman profile records his first meeting with the man whose preaching changed his life - Lord Soper.
In a conversation filmed earlier this year, they discuss the choice confronting a politician between compromise and conscience. Film editor RICHARD TRAYLER SMITH Assistant producer TONY MCAVOY Series producer DANIEL WOLF Producer BARRY LYNCH BBC Wales

The London Mozart Players Tamas Vasary (piano) Alan Opie (baritone) David Schofield
Ian Richardson , Robin Bailey By the mid-1780s it seemed as if Mozart's enormous gamble - to leave the safety of court employment and branch out as an independent freelance musician - had paid off.
At the end of the 1784 season he could name 176 subscribers to his concerts and report 'a handsome income'. It was a time of great happiness for him: he was admitted to the Freemasons, his father was reconciled to his in-laws and his sister was married. It was in this period that he wrote two of his greatest piano concertos, K 466 and K 467, and The
Marriage of Figaro, the first of the three superb Italian comic operas with libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte.
