Ludovic Kennedy introduces the first of five programmes this week to mark the 40th anniversary of the atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Tonight:
Nagasaki - Return Journey Early in August 1945 the Second World War came to an end with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Forty years later two Britons return to Nagasaki, the city they saw destroyed. Leonard Cheshire, yc, the legendary bomber pilot, was Britain's representative on the American atomic bombing mission to Nagasaki. He is still convinced that the atom bomb dropped on Nagasaki was a necessary end to the war and is 'the price that's been paid for the removal of the scourge of world war from our earth'.
Geoffrey Sherring was a British prisoner-of-war in a camp only a mile from the centre of the A-bomb explosion. Although he only just escaped death, he welcomed the bomb: 'Here at last our friends had a weapon that might release us without being killed.'
But the people of Nagasaki remain certain that the atom bombing of their city can never be justified, and that even to possess nuclear weapons is wrong. For them, suffering and death was too high a price to pay for peace. Film cameraman IAN STONE
