Major 'Barney' Benson is none too happy about his assignment as training officer at
Sheridan Military Academy. He's a tough army man and a hard taskmaster, but his new cadets are kids, and the school is run by an order of nuns. Major Benson's no-fun methods make him thoroughly unpopular in this light-hearted family comedy.

with Thora Hird
There are some winners among the hymns which
Thora includes in her final programme. 'The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended' was number one in the Songs of Praise Top Ten you voted for earlier this year. 'Sing to God with gladness' won the Songs of Praise new hymn competition. Thora receives a visit from Cyril Taylor , who was one of the judges of that competition, and is himself the composer of another of tonight's popular hymn tunes, Abbot's Leigh. But, of course, Thora couldn't end the series without including the hymn for which she receives the most letters every year: 'The old rugged cross.'
Alleluia, sing to Jesus (Hyfrydol); When I survey the wondrous cross
(Morte Criste); The old rugged cross; St Patrick's breastplate; Sing to God with gladness; Glorious things of thee are spoken (Abbot's Leigh); Be still, my soul (Finlandia); The day thou gavest. Lord, is ended (St Clement)

One of the longest days of the year draws to a close. The lighthouse keepers on Bass Rock prepare for the 'time of lighting' at 10.4, half an hour before sunset.
Meanwhile 19,000 pairs of squabbling gannets continue to tend and feed their young. And Tony Soper looks back on eight days of birdwatching off the North Sea coast-on Staple Island, Inner Fame and now Bass Rock.
