A South Bank Saga....
A spring morning in Britain's National Theatre complex: on the stage of the Olivier, Ian McKellen rehearses a dangerous sword fight for
Coriolanus. Next door in the Lyttelton, Athol Fugard watches a final run-through of his play Road to Mecca. In Rehearsal Room One
Anthony Hopkins begins a read-through with the company of Pravda. And in the small Cottesloe Theatre, a day-long performance of the successful Mysteries has already begun - God creates the world, from the top of a fork-lift truck. But the Cottesloe is under threat of 'going dark' - the dreaded phrase that means the closure of a theatre, job losses and actors out of work. SIR PETER HALL has announced the closure in response to what he believes is inadequate public subsidy. In the light of this latest crisis, Omnibus explores the past, present and still uncertain future of our National Theatre. Film cameraman JOHN ELSE Film editors MICHAEL FLYNN BOBPORTWAY
