Staple Island is one of 15 Fame Islands (or 28 at low water): all windswept, treeless and uninhabited.
For 60 years the Fames have been run by the National Trust as one of the most important nature reserves in Europe. Peter Hawkey, warden of the Fame Islands, adds a personal note to Tony Soper 's description of Staple Island and its birdlife. BBC Bristol

Puffins, comical 'sea parrots' with brightly-coloured beaks, breed wherever the soil is deep enough for their burrows 17,000 pairs on the Fames, with the biggest colonies on Staple Island.
Guillemots and razorbills lay their single eggs on ledges of bare rock, especially on the Pinnacles on the south side of Staple. In this final daytime report, Tony Soper and Peter Hawkey also hope to show kittiwake, shag, cormorant and fulmar. BBC Bristol
