In June 1,600 athletes from 46 nations met on Long Island, New York, to compete for their own gold, silver and bronze. Teams from mainland China and from Hong Kong were there, following a one-man, fund-raising 'marathon' from Peking to Hong Kong.
While there may be no one yet who runs as fast as Seb Coe , or who throws as far as Tessa Sanderson , that may be just a matter of time. ARNIE BOLDT of Canada has high-jumped 7 feet on his one leg, and many other athletes produce recognisably excellent performances.

On arrival at British Albion, Mr Gryce felt that his lack of ambition would be completely fulfilled. There was a luncheon voucher scheme, a pension fund, paid holidays - and (apparently) nothing much doing between the hours of nine to five.
Then his colleagues began to take an unhealthy interest in him. They asked questions he couldn't answer, and answered questions he hadn't asked. Only the lovely Pam made life bearable, but even she was not quite what she seemed....
