A highly-acclaimed film which celebrates the English at their favourite pastime, with Candida Lycett Green An old miner builds 13 cathedrals in his front garden. A sailor cuts his hedge into a replica of his wartime destroyer. There are old-fashioned rambling cottage gardens; formal flower-patterned gardens; gardens inhabited by gnomes; gardens made with shells; even a garden without any plants. This glowing film will make you laugh, gasp, and even shed a tear or two. Please watch it. (THE TIMES) Photography PHILIP BONHAM-CARTER Producer EDWARD MIRZOEFF

Episode 1 by WILLIAM INGRAM starring Nerys Hughes as Megan Roberts.
'So. You're back.... Not long from the fold and, I suspect, already wondering if the return was worth it? Not that it will be 'open arms' in all quarters. I can think of a few who'd have given their eye-teeth if you'd got on that train ... and slammed the door!'

Eight stories about the Special Operations Executive
Narrated by Michael Bryant
Florence, 11 August 1944
Partisans rise against the Germans and liberate their city. Allied armies wait outside. Links with the Allies are through a secret SOE telephone line across the historic Ponte Vecchio bridge. It was the first major triumph for Italian partisans. For three years Italians had fought alongside the Germans. But in September 1943 they effectively changed sides and Italy itself was invaded by Germany.
SOE and the Italian resistance combined to provide Allies with a vital 'Fourth Arm'. Film cameraman JOHN BECK Film editor MICHAEL FLYNN
