Through the Mangrove Marismas
A water safari down the estuary of the Rio San Cristobal to the Pacific, through the hot, steamy and near-impenetrable jungle in search of strange animals and even stranger plants. Mangrove trees are among the very few kinds of flowering plant that thrive in salt water. They and the tidal swamps where they grow support an immense variety of wildlife: crabs and crocs, hummingbirds and herons, butterflies and boa constrictors, ocelots and olivaceous cormorants.

The Story of the GI Brides

Seventy thousand British girls fell in love with and married American GIs during the Second World War. They followed their husbands across the Atlantic in the biggest migration since the Pilgrim Fathers.

This film is the story of five women - Dot, Denise, Marjorie, Peggy and Blanche - each of whom met her GI in Norfolk. The GIs had glamour and money - they were 'oversexed, overpaid and over here'. The girls were in their teens and looking for excitement. What started as a casual pickup deepened into love.

But not all the romances had happy endings. There were GIs who were already married, there were illegitimate babies. The story of the black GIs is the saddest - welcomed by the British, they became the victims of American segregation. None of the girls realised that marrying a GI was going to change her life. For some, America proved to be the promised land. For others, reality punctured their Hollywood dream. All of them soon found themselves desperately homesick. And in Norfolk, 40 years on, the memory of the Yanks is still kept alive. Maureen longs to find the GI father she's never met. Veronica met her father for the first time when she was 33 - it was an overpowering emotional experience.
