Following the triumph of Sir Richard Attenborough 's Gandhi at the Academy Awards, Barry Norman assesses the current state of the British film industry, including: Ascendancy: Julie Covington stars in this award-winning British Film Institute production about a privileged young woman whose hitherto sheltered life is changed by events in Belfast in the 1920s.
Educating Rita: Michael Caine , a disillusioned university professor, is persuaded to take on the educating of a young working-class woman, Julie Walters , who recreates the role she played in the successful stage version of Willie Russell 's play.
Verity Lambert , recently appointed Director of Production for Thorn EMI Films, talks about her new plans for the company's future.
