for Advent from Skipton, Yorkshire
Advent is the season when the church prepares for the coming of Christ. In tonight's programme from Skipton in North Yorkshire Geoffrey Wheeler talks to some local people about how Christ's teaching has come into their lives - and through them into the lives of others in very practical ways. Among them is Phyllis Burns whose weekly class in elementary English has enabled many of Skipton's Asian wives to play a fuller part in the life of the community. The hymns are sung in the Holy Trinity Parish Church.
Lo, he comes with clouds descending (Helmsley}; 0 come. 0 come. Emmanuel (Ven'i Emmanuel); Blessed assurance; Take my life (Cross of Jesus); On Jordan's bank; A future and a hope: Hark the glad sound (Bristol); Turn back, 0 man

The second of a two-part screen adaptation of Brooke Hayward's best-selling memoirs, starring
'My mother, Margaret Sullavan, was a great star, my father, Leland Hayward, a producer. Together, they were a fountain of life and high spirits, the fulfilment of the American dream. But something went wrong... The joy vanished, leaving a great sadness; an ache for what was, what might have been. What might have been became for the two of us who survived, and for my children, an ambition, a hope for a new day, a brighter future.'

The last in the present series

Eric Robson meets people who have gone out on a limb because of their convictions and asks what beliefs have sustained them.
This week he talks to Dr Allan Boesak, a young coloured South African whose election in August as spiritual leader of 70 million Reformed Christians throughout the world brought him into direct conflict with the white Dutch Reformed Church and the South African authorities when he persuaded the World Alliance of Reformed Churches to declare apartheid a heresy and to suspend the DRC from membership.
Tonight he talks about the conflicts and tensions of being a black theologian and church leader in white South Africa today.
