2: After his first terrifying and humiliating experiences of Japanese customs in Anjiro, Pilot-Major John Blackthorne has been brought before Toranaga, Lord of the Kwanto, the eight provinces and Chief General of the Armies of the East, in Osaka Castle. Toranaga shows interest in Blackthorne but is himself trapped within the castle walls at the mercy of his hated enemy, Lord Ishido, Protector of the Heir and Chief General of the Armies of the West. Actuated by malice, Ishido has demanded the foreigner's imprisonment in Osaka's death row prison and Blackthorne now awaits his fate - crucifixion ! For no one incarcerated there has yetsurvived.
