If top seeds Martina Navratilova, the hottest favourite for years, and Chris Lloyd (above), the defending champion, emerge to today' final we can expect a battle royal. Twice before, the former Czech left-hander has narrowly beaten Mrs Lloyd at the last hurdle (in 1978 and 1979) but she is never completely confident against double-handed passing shots and the ice-cool temperament of the three-time champion. Perhaps last year's talented finalist, Hana Mandlikova, will go one better. Or will this be the year when Tracey Austin finally proves herself on grass? Or will Pam Shriver, whose serve and volley game is ideal for the surface, finally win a major title?
