The story of Britain's Royal Builders and Collectors in nine films
Told by Huw Wheldon
The Tudors reigned over one of the most remarkable periods of this nation's history. It was a century when the language itself, no less than the buildings, the music, and the artefacts, moved from the medieval into the modern world.
The Court was the centre of patronage in all the arts, and the age was dominated by three outstanding monarchs, Henry VII, the founder of the dynasty; Henry VIII, probably the most gifted king ever to sit upon the throne; and Elizabeth I, the extraordinary daughter of an extraordinary father.
Sir Huw Wheldon looks at some of the glories of the Royal Collection: the portraits of Holbein, the miniatures and jewels; and also explores the magnificent buildings, including the Palaces of St James and Hampton Court.

The arts in action
Introduced by Humphrey Burton Tonight: The Human Face The Unretouched Woman
Eve Arnold started work as a photographer 25 years ago in New York. She became a member of -Magnum, the international picture co-operative whose founders included Cartier Bresson and Robert Capa. The condition of woman in harems, Joan Crawford and migrant potato pickers are all photographed without glamour or sentiment. They have that touch of realism which marks the work of an outstanding photo-journalist.
'I learned a basic truth. It is not technique which makes the picture. If the photographer cares about the people in front of the lens and is compassionate then much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument.' with a second showing of Portraits - Face to Face
