The world's top International tennis talent is once again gathered at the All England Club to battle on its famous grass courts for a total prize money of over £145,000 in this, the greatest Open championship of all.

At 2 o'clock on the Centre Court play starts in Wimbledon 1976. Arthur Ashe, the skilful winner of last year's Men's Singles, begins the defence of his title with a formidable array of players seeking his crown: former champions Jimmy Connors, Stan Smith, John Newcombe and Jan Kodes. Others who are determined to pocket the £12,500 first prize include the 20-year-old idol Bjorn Borg, the mercurial Ilie Nastase, current Masters' champion, and the Argentinian, Guillermo Vila, 1975 'Grand Prix' champion, who excites the crowd with his forceful play.

The magic of Wimbledon fortnight, the drama being enacted on the courts, the stories behind the news: all these are captured by our outside broadcast cameras and expert commentators - Dan Maskell, Jack Kramer, Bill Knight, Bill Thelfall and John Barrett. Harry Carpenter introduces the programme and provides the comment and up-to-date results from all the courts.
