including Vassall
The Vassall spy affair was one of the major security scandals of the 1960s. The KGB had snared Vassall by blackmailing him for his homosexuality, and for six years he sold Admiralty secrets to the Russians.
Before he was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment for espionage in 1962, Vassall's defence lawyer said ' This was the story of a vulnerable and possibly irresolute man who became the victim of a ruthless and pitiless apparatus, which squeezed him into submission.'
Now released on parole, John Vassall talks to Ludovic Kennedy about his life, the secrets he gave away, and the secret he tried to keep.
