Part 2 in the eight-part series Grand Strategy of World War II
Presented by Michael Howard

Mid-1940. Germany has conquered most of Western Europe. Now, before he attacks Russia, Hitler must force Britain out of the war. He offers peace. Britain rejects the offer. So now Hitler prepares to invade, to cut off London from the rest of the country but before his Blitzkrieg can cross the Channel the RAF must be destroyed.

Italy's dictator decides to share the spoils of victory and attacks in the Mediterranean. He bungles the operation and German troops badly needed elsewhere are sent to save Il Duce's face.

Tonight Michael Howard looks at the development of the opposing air forces, and the decisions facing both Hitler and Churchill at this vital stage of the war. He also introduces film on the Battle of Britain and the war in the Mediterranean.
