The first in an eight-part series
Presented by Michael Howard

In 1939, German troops invade Poland and war breaks out in Europe for the second time in 25 years. It lasts for six years, but at the start Adolf Hitler gambles for the rapid victory which Germany needs - and using the powerful Blitzkrieg he almost succeeds.
Tonight Michael Howard looks at the major decisions of the time - when and why they were made, and introduces films which show the Blitzkrieg at its most effective, in the battles for Poland and France.
