Twenty-five years after the first major victory by a British Army in the 1939-45 War, Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein revisits the battlefield.
"The British soldier who said that the desert is miles and miles of damn all - he was just about right.
It was a solid, solid killing match.
Some writers since have rather thought I might have done it some other way. I don't believe you could have done it any other way.
When the battle began, at half past nine, I was asleep in bed.
All Generals are different. There is no sealed pattern for Generals. We are all human. We all make mistakes. What we try to do, of course, is to make the fewest number of mistakes.
The lives of his men are very sacred to any Commander... Generals are meant to win battles... but they are also meant to do it with the least possible expenditure of human life."

with film shot during the battle by both British and German cameramen, and comments from General Seigfried Westphal, German Chief of Staff.
