The story of Carroll O'Daly and Eileen Kavanagh
Translated from the Gaelic versions Of the traditional Irish storytellers and dramatised for radio by Seamus Ennis and Francis Dillon
Music composed and conducted by Tristram Cary
Uillean pipes played by Seamus Ennis
Production by Francis Dillon
Eileen Kavanagh died on June 14, 1717. Very little is known about Carroll O'Daly except through the scores of stories relating his exploits as a kind of Irish Till Eutenspiegel—a great lover, a master craftsman, and a poet. These are all in Irish Gaelic and interweave magic elements and ancient beliefs culled from the oriental tales which, as Professor J. H. Delargy says, ' fetched up on the Atlantic coast of Ireland: they could be driven no further.' All the versions have as their climax the tragic love of Carroll and Eileen, expressed in the song ' Eileen Aroon.'
