Eileen Kavanagh died on June 14, 1717. Very little is known about Carroll O'Daly except through the scores of stories relating his exploits as a kind of Irish Till Eutenspiegel—a great lover, a master craftsman, and a poet. These are all in Irish Gaelic and interweave magic elements and ancient beliefs culled from the oriental tales which, as Professor J. H. Delargy says, ' fetched up on the Atlantic coast of Ireland: they could be driven no further.' All the versions have as their climax the tragic love of Carroll and Eileen, expressed in the song ' Eileen Aroon.'
