Mr. Pennington discusses the interaction of economics and politics in the Civil War period: he suggests that ' the 1640S and 1650s were the greatest hour of the City-State of London.' His reflections are prompted by the recent book by Professor R. H. Tawney , Business and Politics under James 1: the career of Lionel Cranfield as merchant and minister.
