Havergal Brian was born in Dresden, Staffordshire, on January 29, 1876. His Symphony No. 9, which had its first broadcast performance in the Third Programme last March, is one of a series of twelve composed between 1922 and 1956. It was begun in July 1951 and finished the following November, and is inscribed to Eric Warr , BBC Assistant Head of Sound Music Programmes. Scored for large orchestra, including organ and bells, it is in three short movements played without a break.
