Chief of Protocol of the Danish Parliament
Denmark abolished the hereditary principle in 1849, and has spent a hundred years since then seeking the ideal form for a second chamber. In 1953 the Upper House was abolished altogether, and Denmark now has four years' experience of single-chamber government. Chief of Protocol Svend Thorsen suggests some of the lessons that may be learned from Denmark's constitutional experiments.
